Is Manual Therapy Right for You?
What is Manual Therapy?
Unlike Astym® treatment, which we discussed last month, manual therapy is a type of hands-on physical therapy that treats chronic pain, sports injuries, age-related pain, and other common joint and muscle pains. A therapist kneads and manipulates the muscles and joints to promote mobilization. This process can also help to strengthen weak muscles and repair any injuries or strains. There are different kinds of manual therapy, including:
- Myofascial Treatment: Promotes flexibility and improves mobility of connective tissues to reduce scarring.
- Soft Tissue Mobilization: Firm, direct pressure that relaxes strained muscles and stretches tight muscles.
- Muscle Reeducation: Treats pain without manipulation. This technique helps to restore functions and mobility to injured muscles and joints.
- Muscle Energy Techniques: Restores energy and mobility in injured muscles. These are great for those who experience muscle spasms and/or chronic pain.
Are you currently suffering from muscle pain or other chronic body pains? Then manual therapy may be for you. Country Roads Physical Therapy provides manual therapy services in all five of our clinics in West Virginia. Talk to our friendly staff today about setting up an appointment!
Manual Therapy is Suitable for All Ages
Many of our patients choose or receive referrals for manual therapy for its muscle and joint pain-relieving abilities. No matter your age, gender, or physical abilities, manual therapy can help relieve and treat chronic pains. Those who experience pain in their spine, lower back, wrists, elbows, knees, and other joints may find relief in choosing manual therapy. There are many therapy forms that we can work through with you, including muscle reeducation, myofascial treatment, and others.
Manual therapy is a common treatment for many sports injuries, as well. Are you getting ready for the next sports season, but are still nursing an injury? Talk to a certified therapist at Country Roads Physical Therapy to learn more about our options, and check back soon for more information regarding safe sports!
Will My Treatments be Painful?
Every experience is different, but in general manual therapy should not be unbearably painful. You might find that your muscles are sore the next day, but it shouldn’t be so painful and sore that you can’t move.
An important part of manual therapy is continuing prescribed exercises at home. These exercises will help to keep your muscles and joints from stiffening in between appointments. If these are also causing extreme pain or discomfort, it is best to speak with your physical therapist to switch your care plan.
Who Performs Manual Therapy?
While on paper it may seem simple, not just anyone can provide manual therapy treatments. Proper treatments assess specific parts of the body to better treat injured or painful areas. Physical therapists that perform manual therapy have the proper training and education to provide these treatments. How Will I Know What Therapy Will Work on My Pain?
All forms of manual therapy can treat various problems and pains for patients of all ages. Your highly trained physical therapist will perform an evaluation and help to pinpoint what therapy type will be the most successful for your pain or injury. Everyone is different, and if one type is not giving you the results you need, we can adjust your treatment to better promote rehabilitation.
How Do I Know if Manual Therapy is Right for Me?
All patients are different, and what worked for your sister or friend may not work for you. However, manual therapy can treat a wide range of injuries, age-related pain, and musculoskeletal disorders. The best way to know if manual therapy is right for you is to talk with a trained physical therapist at Country Roads Physical Therapy. Our therapists work closely with each patient to create an individualized treatment plan. We can assess your pain and decide if manual therapy is the right fit for you. If you decide that this is not working for your pain, we have a wide variety of other treatment programs to help you on the road to total rehabilitation.
